What "up to 4 friends" actually means

Friends mode is not everyone running their own parallel escape. Your group shares one escape session: you and up to 4 friends break through the same prison together. Counting you, that is a maximum group of 5 players.

The setting and goal are the same either way. Every escape takes place in the prison, spread across 5 floors of walls to break through, and the goal is to escape all 5 floors and beat your best time, whether you play solo or with friends.

As for where you all end up: each server holds up to 15 players, so a 5-player group is within one server's player cap.

The crew gem bonus

There is one group perk tied to playing together. The VIP - FOREVER game pass (R$299) gives its owner 2X GEMS on every run, and the bonus extends to the group: while you are playing with that owner, your whole crew gets 2X GEMS. The maximum bonus is 2X.

Keep in mind this is a paid pass, not an automatic friend bonus: someone in the group has to actually own it, and everyone else benefits just by playing in that person's crew.
